The Digestive Care Centers at CGA and
AGA are AAAHC Accredited
Charlottesville Gastroenterology physicians have
been performing office-based colonoscopy since
April 2001. In 2006, our two
state-of-the-art endoscopy centers were
accredited by the Ambulatory Association for
Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC), a "leader in
developing standards to advance and promote
patient safety, quality, value, and measurement
of performance." We are the only
office-based endoscopy center in Central Virginia
to achieve this accreditation. The DCC houses
three brand new endoscopy suites and offers a
full range of endoscopic services, including colonoscopy for colon cancer
screening and upper endoscopy. We use
advanced endoscopic equipment with high
resolution digital imaging technology. We
have designed our unit to combine the convenience
of an office-based endoscopy setting with the
safety and diagnostic capabilities of an
ambulatory endoscopy center. Our
office-based endoscopic services adhere to
standards published by the American
Gastroenterological Association.
Open Access Colonoscopy
Available CGA now offers "open
access colonoscopy" to healthy
patients who are eligible for colon cancer
screening. In order to improve the
convenience of your exam, a pre-procedure visit
is no longer required, saving you time and
effort. To learn more, or to schedule a
screening colonoscopy, please call our screening
colonoscopy coordinators at (434) 817-8484,
extension 6.

Virtual colonoscopy is a
minimally invasive X-ray procedure for imaging
the colon. Recent studies have demonstrated
that this procedure may be equivalent to
conventional colonoscopy for the detection of
polyps over 6 mm in size. The procedure
does not detect smaller polyps with great
accuracy, and polyps cannot be removed by this
test. Any polyps discovered by virtual
colonoscopy would require removal by conventional
colonoscopy. A bowel preparation is
required for 1-2 days prior to the exam, and the
procedure is performed without sedation.
Martha Jefferson Hospital has been offering
virtual colonoscopy to selected patients for the
past 4 years. Currently, this procedure is
not covered by Medicare or commercial insurers
for colon cancer screening. Martha
Jefferson and Charlottesville Gastroenterology
Associates have developed a consensus statement
on virtual colonoscopy. [Read More>>]
Colorectal Cancer
Awareness Month occurs each March. Colon
cancer will affect nearly 147,000 adults in the
U.S. this year, and over 57,000 people will die
of the disease. Fortunately, colon cancer
is entirely preventable with early screening. Colonoscopy is the gold
standard for colorectal cancer screening.
Medicare currently pays for this test for both
average risk and high risk individuals. The
Virginia legislature has also mandated that
commercial insurers provide reimbursement for
colon cancer screening tests. [Read More>>]
